The original purchase from the Indians of Northampton included territory now known as Northampton, Easthampton, Westhampton, Southampton, and parts of Hatfield and Montgomery. The land purchased from the Indians cost about $200.00 in wampum and was about 100 square miles. On 29 October 1654 the new settlement of Northampton was begun. The purchase was organized and completed by John Pynchon, Elizer Holyoke and Samuel Chapin.
