Today we think of an Innkeeper as a hotel or motel owner, but in Colonial times Inns were much more important and quite necessary. Inns during the 1700s were a place to socialize and have a drink, and discuss politics and farming practices or other issues of the day. They were often the location of meetings that may have included town meetings, meetings of Selectmen as well as a place for a traveler to sleep. Some Inns were simply taverns that did not offer sleeping accomodations. During this time period they offered the only meeting place for townsmen outside of church. Lanesborough appears to have had many such places, however, the size of the list may simply be several places that changed ownership over a period of about 20 years. Below I have transcribed a list found in the microfilm of Lanesborough records from the Berkshire Athenaeum Library and Archives in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. You can view a copy of the image HERE . This purpose of publishing this list is to show more names of people living here at the time and provide dates as well as providing a brief look at the history of the town of Lanesborough.
